Sasquatch Run is a platform game for Android devices. Player controls a sasquatch and helps him to jump over obstacles and collect acorns.
About the Project
Like any emerging industry, the game industry found its leader products in a short time. Super Mario Bros. is one of those products and Mario is one of the most recognizable characters of all time. The success of Super Mario Bros. inspired many developers to create their own game series, and, after a while, they gave the world a number of iconic 2D-platform games: Contra, Castlevania, Sonic the Hedgehog, Earthworm Jim, Disney's Alladin, Super Metroid and many others. It seems that all possible fabulous and living beings have already been the protagonists of platformers: a hedgehog, an earthworm, frogs, a bandicoot, ducklings — and the list goes on.
Our Client once ruminated on what character has not ever been a platform game’s protagonist, and the answer was: a sasquatch. The fact that a sasquatch is often portrayed as an antagonist in a popular culture is an argument in favor of such a choice of the main character since the Client wanted to bring more positive emotions into the sasquatch’s image. Thus, we set about the work of developing Sasquatch Run.
The Sasquatch Run’s gameplay is a combination of a classic 2D platformer and an endless runner. We were inspired by the next endless runner games: Canabalt, Subway Surfers, Jetpack Joyride, and Super Mario Run. The client wanted to reach the widest possible audience, so we decided to make the characters and objects in bright and saturated colors. The animated film The Secret of Kells and the webcomic Ava’s Demon served as an inspiration for the game’s visual design.
Ultimately, we identified the following game features:
- 8 player speeds;
- 7 types of level-ups;
- 14 types of bonuses;
- 9 destructible and 13 indestructible objects;
- Integration with Google Play services.
The following team members took part in the Android mobile app development of Sasquatch Run: UI/UX Designer, Android / Unity Developer, QA Engineer and Project Manager. The mobile design of the main character was one of the most crucial parts of the project. This is due to the fact that a sasquatch has rarely been a character in cartoons or games, and, moreover, has never been a good character at all. Thus, UI/UX Designer had a difficult task to create a character that has never been depicted as a good one before.
However, our Client was very happy with the concept art of the protagonist and all other objects, so we moved on to developing the game’s sound. UI/UX Designer assumed the position of Sound Engineer. She managed to find a perfect soundtrack and sound effects that corresponded to the gameplay, and create an excellent audiovisual balance. The work on the game’s physics was the next stage in the development of Sasquatch Run. Unity 3D was used as a game engine. Also, the Android/Unity developer utilized the following tools: C#, Android SDK, Android Studio, Mono Develop, Visual Studio, Blender, UV Mapping, Gimp, Unity IAP, Unity Analytics, Google Play Game Services, Git and Redmine. He harmonically combined all the elements of the game and built exciting gameplay.
Our team’s efforts resulted in an exciting 2D platformer with a unique main character everyone would like, regardless of their gender and age. Prior to Sasquatch Run, our Client has already had a positive experience with our team. This time, the Client has been more than satisfied with our work again, so, at the moment, our cooperation in making another project is ongoing.
